1. You truly have to get to know your customers if you’re going to appeal to them. This goes above and beyond simply knowing the age group of your target audience. You have to know what they’re interested in, how they communicate and what they need from your business. This is how you’ll learn the voice of the customer (VOC).

2. Once you get to know your customers well, you’ll be able to form your business strategies to suit your consumers. In order to continue being connected to your customer base, you have to make sure that your customers are getting what they actually need, what you think they need.

3. Group consumers by specific needs or traits. This will help you to effectively target every type of consumer you have instead of trying the same thing with every customer and ultimately losing a few in the process.

4. Change your approach to reach everyone on their own terms. Not everybody likes e-mail blasts and some people aren’t on various social media websites. Using a variety of approaches ensures that nobody’s left out. The consumers you don’t reach with certain marketing avenues you’ll connect with via others.

5. Don’t assume that every customer out there is a customer worth targeting. Instead, prune your customer base so that you don’t waste your time trying to get clientele from people who really won’t benefit from what you have to offer. If you don’t think you can deliver what someone’s looking for, refer them to someone who will be able to help.

6. Log information about your customers and interactions. It’s not possible to remember every detail of every interaction you have, so you’ll need to develop a system for logging and storing important customer information.

7. Don’t be dissuaded if things aren’t perfect from the get-go. Building customer relationships take time, just like any relationship. As time goes on, assess how things are going and adjust accordingly.
